Fresh flowers brighten any space, but they need a little love to stay beautiful. Whether you’ve received a stunning bouquet or picked one up yourself, here are some simple steps to make your flowers last as long as possible.
1. Start with clean water
As soon as you get your flowers home, fill a clean vase with fresh, room-temperature water. Dirty vases or old water encourage bacteria, which make flowers wilt faster. Add the flower food packet if you have one—it’s like a vitamin drink for your blooms.
2. Trim the stems
Before placing flowers in the vase, cut about one inch off the stems at an angle using sharp scissors or garden shears. This helps the flowers absorb more water. Repeat this every two to three days to keep them hydrated.
3. Change the water often
Don’t let water sit and get cloudy. Change it every two days and clean the vase if needed. Fresh water is key to keeping bacteria away and your bouquet happy.
4. Remove fading flowers
If you notice one flower drooping or turning brown, remove it right away. Old flowers can speed up wilting in the rest of the bouquet.
5. Keep flowers cool and out of direct sunlight
Heat and sunlight can make flowers open too quickly and fade. Find a cool spot in your home—away from heaters, sunny windows, and even ripening fruit (fruit releases ethylene gas that makes flowers age faster).
With just a few minutes of care, your bouquet will stay bright and beautiful for days longer. Treat them well, and they’ll keep your space glowing!
